What to Know About Round Brushes
In my experience as a stylist for 16 years, I've learned one thing about the craft – DON'T MESS WITH MY BRUSHES!! I'm a freak for them! I have so many with SLIGHTLY different barrel sizes and bristle types. I happen to love the nuances of each style and type, but I know most American women have little time for it all. Let me break it down for you so you don't have to waste your time again with the wrong brush for the job. Here's the skinny on round brushes and oval brushes .
THE BARRELSIZE –– The size of the brush you use will determine the size of the curl. Smaller barrel = tighter curl. Bigger barrel = less curl, but with more body/movement. Sound easy enough? If you don't like the way your hair is turning out after you blow dry, the barrel size is usually the first suspect. If it's too flat, maybe your brush is too big. Too curly–curly? Then it's too small. Oval brushes are amazing! They are perfect for creating a mostly–straight look with a little kick at the ends.
THE BASE –– A lot of round brushes have a solid body or base that the bristles rest in. These are great for creating volume and body in hair that is silky and tends to go flat. Some round brushes have a vented base. The benefit of a vented round brush is that the heat of the dryer can pass through the vents and dry the hair faster. I love them for smoothing out hair that tends to be thick and frizzy.
THE BRISTLES –– There are few choices in bristles. Most round brushes are either some version of nylon or some version of boar hair. Some are mixed. The benefit of nylon bristles is that it can de-tangle the hair nicely. They can get through dense hair much more easily than the compact bristles of a boar hair brush. Boar hair brushes are great for shine and smoothing the hair. A great brush for thick hair that needs to be smoothed is one that has a mix of long nylon bristles embedded in the boar hair. This allows you to manipulate a large thick section of hair more easily. It's important to try different kinds to see what you like. Maybe ask you stylist if you can try out different ones to see how they feel.
Kimberly's FAVE –– Okay, so my all-time favorite brush-to-end-all-brushes is the OVAL "ceramic+ionic" brush by Olivia Garden. It helps create amazing body, smoothes out frizz and gives the littlest kick at the ends without "curl" per se. It's easy to handle and it is so fast! It has a vented base so the hair dries quickly and it is made with boar hair so it smoothes the hair nicely. It's the "Smart Car" of brushes.
